What was your motivation, applying for the Int. GS Trophy 2018?

Participating in the Int. GS Trophy is every adventure rider's dream. For me, it is the dream ride of my life. I've been observing the Int. GS Trophy since its beginning, the thrill, challenges and the fun are all aspects to aspire as a rider.

Which bike do you ride and what is the most exciting or surprising story you have experienced with it?

I am riding a R 1200 GS Adventure. What I love about BMW bikes since I acquired one in 2008 is that my wife loves to come with me on my adventure rides. The comfort, reliability and the prowess it has, to go to places which other brands cannot reach, is superlatively.

What is the most appealing thing for you about the Int. GS Trophy 2018?

Meeting the most skilled adventure riders around the world is what excites me most. Making new friends and building deep camaraderie with my South East Asian teammates will also be exciting since we are a team composed from different countries and probably meet only few times before the event.

What does the Spirit of GS mean to you?

Exploring beyond places where conventional riders can go is what comes to my mind when asked about the Spirit of GS.

How do you prepare yourself for the Int. GS Trophy 2018?

Since I consider GS Trophy as the most challenging experience I will ever have in my life, I prepare myself physically, emotionally and mentally to become more of what I am now, and I am making every effort to surpass this challenge.

What was your motivation, applying for the Int. GS Trophy 2018?

I felt that I needed to challenge myself to be able to fully utilise the bike of my dreams as made famous by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman in the movie "Long Way Round". To me, the R 1200 GS Adventure is more than a touring bike and had I merely kept it on the road then I would not be unlocking its full potential. So I decided to explore the potential of the bike off-road. And with the set-up of the GS Trophy in this region, I felt that it was an opportunity not to be missed where I could explore the full potential of the bike as well as improving my technical riding skills in a safe environment surrounded by industry and riding experts.

Which bike do you ride and what is the most exciting or surprising story you have experienced with it?

I ride a R 1200 GS Adventure and the most exciting time I have ever had with my bike was to take it off road in the Palm Oil Plantations and I was indeed surprised that even though the R 1200 GS Adventure is a heavy bike, it could handle the terrain just as well as a mid-sized Enduro / Motocross bike.

What is the most appealing thing for you about the Int. GS Trophy 2018?

Winning the Malaysian stage of the qualifying round of the Int. GS Trophy 2018 instantly shot me to fame. Suddenly I became an idol and had all sorts of people trying to befriend me as if I was a super hero. But at the end of the day, I am still just an ordinary fellow who never expected to win the Malaysian Leg.

Although it is fun being bathed in warmth and being put on a pedestal, the most appealing thing for me is to be able to learn from the experts as well as fellow participants how to ride better.

It is also appealing to me that I am able to represent my home state of Johor as well as my riding buddies and providing them with an inspiration that a newbie such as myself could also reach the top of adventure riding.

What does the Spirit of GS mean to you?

The GS stands for "Gelände/Straße" which means Off road and Road. Therefore the Spirit of GS means the freedom to ride wherever my dreams take me. As long as there is terra firma, my trusted GS will take me there.

How do you prepare yourself for the Int. GS Trophy 2018?

I believe that there are a few important ingredients to a successful campaign in my effort to be in the winning team of the GS Trophy. Firstly, I will be taking lessons with a BMW Motorrad certified instructor to improve my technical riding. Then we will formulate and follow a training schedule to hone my skills further. Secondly, I will have to improve on my physical endurance fitness and agility by staying on a strict diet and scheduled gym training. I will also seek to form a training team with my fellow participants to go through the exercises so we may get to know each other's strengths and weaknesses so we may trust each other to work as a coherent team by the time we enter the finals of the Int. GS Trophy 2018.
