"Whatever I do, it must make me happy".

Interview with vintage racer and scrambler fan Joy Lewis.

Why follow the herd if you can have so much more fun beyond the mainstream? Joy Lewis has made her forename part of the programme. A talk with a cheerful soul who doesn't adapt, but lives to her own style.

Joy, why are you so fascinated with motorcycles?
I have always had a thing for bikes. My father used to tell me lots about his desert rallys. When I was twelve years old, my grandfather taught me how to ride on his Honda and this instantly grabbed me. For me, motorcycling is thrilling, an adventure and fully concentrating with all senses on the riding. I also love having new experiences on every tour.
You were there at the "Babes Ride Out". What is that all about?
At the "Babes Ride Out", motorcyclists meet up in the middle of the desert. It's a fantastic opportunity for women to share their passion for motorcycling – whether they are new or experienced, young or old.
But there still aren't that many women sitting on motorcycles are there?
In the meantime, around 14 percent of all motorcyclists are women and with each smaller, lighter motorcycle which comes onto the market, there are more and more. I don't like constantly discussing the differences in riding styles between men and women. I ride every day with the lads and against them in races. I often find myself living up to the lifestyle even more than they do!

Let's go anywhere: Joy Lewis and the R nineT Scrambler.
If you could choose, where would you travel to?
At the moment I am in the midst of planning. I would like to travel to Alaska, my home state. I would also like to spend some time in South America or wind my way through Europe on my motorcycle. The list goes on and on. Because I still have so much more to discover – ideally with my motorcycle and with people who share my passion for everything on two wheels. I couldn't imagine an excursion without a motorcycle.
What does the perfect day with an R nineT Scrambler look like?
I get up early, load up my bike with a few changes of clothes, sleeping stuff and camping utensils and set off – without a fixed destination and with all the time in the world. I love spontaneous excursions and love finding out the best routes from the locals. With a motorcycle like the R nineT Scrambler, it's easy to get anywhere.

The R nineT Scrambler stands for freedom, unconventionality and untamed lifestyle. Does this suit you?
Wow, profound question. My family never told me what girls and boys should or should not do. So I never had the feeling that I wasn't allowed to do something. My independence has always been important to me. And my family has always supported me in this. With a name like "Joy", I think it's clear that I am no child of sadness. This is why I make sure that I have fun in everything I do.
Do you have a life motto?
Today is THE day. Or: Life is short, eat your dessert first. I think both mean the same thing.
Please end the sentence: For me, motorcycling is ...
Life.
