GS legends

We live and breathe for the GS legend.

Since 1980, there has been a synonym for adventure: the BMW GS. An icon. A trendsetter. A pioneer. No other motorcycle supports the leap into adventure as reliably as a GS. With its roots anchored in off-road sport, it soon proved itself a sure-fire recipe for the winner's podium. Both in the past and today, the GS is miles ahead – on motorways, rural roads, country lanes and in unpaved areas. We are writing history in the process and ride on and on. We spread the "spirit of GS" and pass it on from generation to generation – we live for the GS legends.

Paris-Dakar

We follow our calling.

We follow our calling.

The "Paris-Dakar" has the reputation of being one of the most challenging rallys in the world, and Frenchman Hubert Auriol followed precisely this reputation. With a tent in his luggage and pioneering spirit under his helmet, Auriol made his way into the desert in 1981. His goal: victory. His motorcycle: a standard BMW. He wanted to do something that never been done before. He wanted to go to extremes. He wanted to be the first to ride a BMW into pole position at the "Paris-Dakar" rally. He achieved that goal and promptly repeated it in 1983.

Mission accomplished.

Mission accomplished.

The ambition to continue the winning streak was awakened. In 1984 and 1985, BMW sent a factory team equipped with modifications suitable for the desert to the "Paris-Dakar" rally. They defied the challenges and truly revealed the spirit of GS for the first time. Gaston Rahier rode his GS to the top of the winner's podium two consecutive years through sand, dust, heat and cold. BMW was also among the winners at the Pharaons rally and the Baja California rally. In 1987, BMW ended its factory involvement and soon private riders began making the headlines.

Legends return.

Legends return.

Even after a ten-year break, none of the spirit of GS had been lost. In the first year of the comeback, BMW Motorrad learned a tough lesson, but for precisely this reason the BMWs were back in the starting blocks the next year – stronger than ever before. And that enabled Frenchman Richard Sainct to achieve the fifth victory in total for BMW Motorrad at a Paris-Dakar rally in 1999. But that wasn't enough; the biggest triumph came in 2000. BMW filled the entire podium and took fourth place as well. And even though the factory's rally involvement ended in 2001, the spirit of GS is still at the starting line today and is rising to the challenge.

Adventure guaranteed.

No other motorcycle has more adventure than the GS. GS models have been riding over dirt paths, through the Gobi desert, the Thai rainfall or winding mountain passes to the next viewpoint since 1980 – adventure is the goal. And regardless of which adventure you have in store, the right GS will take you there.
